Top Tips For Summer Ready Over 50 Skin

As the Summer Solstice approaches and now that you’ve been doing strength training to build up those muscles, you’ll most likely want to show a bit more skin.

I get asked a lot how to reduce creepy skin, and while building muscles helps, the most important thing to do is to take care of your skin.

I’m not a dermatologist but believe me I’ve tried A LOT!   Here are the tops tips I found to get your skin ready for summer!

#1 Exfoliate

To make your skin look brighter, you need to exfoliate. Doing so removes the dead skin that, if left untreated, can dull your complexion.  As we age our skin gets thinner so be careful you don’t get too overzealous!

Try an exfoliating scrub.   Here are products I’ve found that use natural ingredients so you avoid those harmful parabens >>  Natural Exfoliating Face Mask with Manuka Honey & Walnut or Tree Hut Shea Sugar Scrub

Tip:  Apply the exfoliating scrub all over the face and body using circular motions. Doing so at least twice a week for the maximum benefit.

You could also try a Dry Brush.   This is my favorite way to exfoliate the skin on my body (not my face or neck).   It’s a little more aggressive so be careful.   Here is an inexpensive Dry Brush I found on Amazon that has two type of bristles. >>    Shower Brush with Soft and Stiff bristles

Tip: Start at your feet and brush upward toward the heart. Similarly, when you start on your arms, begin at the hands and work upward. Use firm, small strokes upward, or work in a circular motion.

#2  Moisturize

An added bonus to a good exfoliation routine is that your skin is more receptive to a moisturizer.   This is a good thing in the summer as your skin will require all the hydration it can get to help in its battle against the sun.   By quenching your skin’s thirst with moisturizers, especially after exfoliation, you’ll give your skin a natural softness.

Here are my favorites for my body (I use others for my face just let me know if you want any suggestions):

Cetaphil Ultra-Healing Body Lotion with Ceramides for Dry, Rough, Flaky Skin

Everyone Lotion, Hands / Face / Body   (this one is very reasonable and they offer different scents)

Alpha Skin Care Renewal Body Lotion | Anti-Aging Formula   This one is a bit more “aggressive” with 12% Glycolic Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA)   Not recommended for sensitive skin and I don’t use it everyday.

#3  Always protect from the sun

I spend years abusing my skin with trying to be tan and I am paying the price.   Not only does it cause wrinkles it can cause skin cancer.   Protect as often as you can.   I have an article on which sunscreens I prefer (mineral vs chemical) but not matter what just wear it and cover up as often as you can.    Leather, sun damaged skin is very difficult and expensive to fix.

Here are my two favorite sunscreens today

Face >>  Australian Gold Botanical Sunscreen Tinted Face Mineral Lotion SPF 50

Body >>  MAKEP:REM UV Defense  Sun Fluid SPF 50+

#4 Eat Healthy and Drink a lot of Water

Along with exercise to keep your muscles toned and strong, eating well is the key to keeping your skin healthy.  The appearance of our skin is very often a reflection of the way we treat our body. Keeping up a good diet will result in noticeably healthier skin.

Also make sure to drink your water.  I notice a big difference in my skin when I’m not drinking enough water (or drinking too much wine!)

So love the skin you’re in this summer by applying these simple tips and I know you will see a difference.
