What is YOUR definition of Health?

Merriam-Webster’s definition of health is – “the condition of being well or free from disease”

The World Health Organization (WHO) expands this definition to “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

This is one of my favorites in that it’s not about being free from illness or injury but being healthy enough to deal with all that life throws at you.  “Health is the Inner State of Resilience and Balance that allows you to move through life and not get hurt by all the things that have the potential to hurt you; germs, allergens, toxins, carcinogens, even the trauma of falls or accidents.”   Dr. Andrew Weil

After years of working with people from all walks of life and entirely different personalities, I have come to embrace the fact that the term “health” means something different to everyone.   In my world people don’t come to me with an illness and only minor injuries but all of them are looking to improve their health.  Many start out stating that their health goal is to be at a certain weight.   Some quickly see the bigger benefit of feeling energetic and happy even before they reach their weight goal.   Very often clients state they want toned arms or a flat belly and while I’ve seen many flex their stronger biceps at me they realize it’s more about being able to carry their groceries in from the car or keep up with their grandchild.

As I expand my reach throughout the community, guiding others to be live happy, healthy and productive lives I would love to know what your definition of health is.   Leave me a comment below.

BTW My definition of health today is being able to progress in my dancing with my husband.   On August 13th we celebrated our 28th wedding anniversary at an Arthur Murray Dance competition in Anaheim.     My feet and legs are very tired but we had an amazing time!
