Healthy Travel Tips: Maintaining Wellness on Vacation for Women Over 50

Healthy vacation

It’s the summer of 2023 and the world is OPEN!! Do you have any fun vacation plans? I’m still recovering a bit and our next big trip will be to my nieces wedding in New Jersey at the end of August. We’re really looking forward to a little family reunion and sharing in Carissa’s special day.

Traveling is an incredible opportunity to explore new destinations, immerse yourself in different cultures, and create unforgettable memories. As a woman over 50, maintaining your wellness while on vacation becomes even more important to ensure you make the most of your travels. My brother got married in April and while the trip was fun I didn’t feel that great when I got back. I took the trip as an excuse to go crazy (which I had NOT been doing because of my breast cancer surgery recover). I ate hamburgers, french fries, cakes…and drank more than I was used to. This time I’m going to do it different.

Below are some tips I’m going to adopt to have fun but prioritize my health and well-being while enjoying every moment of our next vacation.

Prioritize self-care

Self-care should be a top priority, especially when you’re away from your regular routine. I know that it might not be easy but see if you can carve out a little time for yourself to relax, rejuvenate, and recharge. We will be surrounded my family and trying to figure out who’s going where and what we can do to help. Most everyone will be leaving a day before us and we’re excited to spend some time alone just doing what brings us joy and get some time to rejuvenate;

What can you do to prioritize self-care while you’re on vacation; read a book, take a hike in nature, practicing meditation, indulge in a spa treatment? Members of the Be Healthy Enough Digital Fitness Studio why not take 15 minutes and listen to a Walking Meditation?

Remember, it’s your vacation, and self-care is an essential part of maintaining your overall well-being.

Stay active

Staying active while traveling is crucial for women over 50 to maintain their fitness and energy levels. Incorporate physical activities into your itinerary that suit your preferences and capabilities. Take a leisurely stroll through the streets of your destination, participate in a yoga class, go hiking, or swim in the ocean. Engaging in physical activities not only benefits your physical health but also enhances your mood and mental well-being.

If you’re reading this in July of 2023 our monthly workout calendar contains only workout videos that use no equipment or just a packable exercise band. With the Be Healthy Enough App which allows you to download workouts just in case you don’t have the internet, there is no excuse not to keep up with your workout plans.

FYI. Here are the different bands I use for travel workouts Mini Band Set, Booty Bands, Band with handles

Plan your meals

Maintaining a balanced diet can be challenging while on vacation, but with proper planning, you can make healthier food choices. Seek out local markets and grocery stores to purchase fresh fruits, vegetables, and healthy snacks. Opt for nutritious meals that include lean proteins, whole grains, and plenty of vegetables. If you’re dining out, explore local cuisine but also consider portion sizes and choose healthier options whenever possible.

Just in case the above isn’t possible why not pack some good quality protein powder HERE IS MY FAVORITE

Oh and pack a lunch for the plane! We packed a couple of turkey sandwiches, apples and some cut up veggies. Security doesn’t mind. Food at the airport or on the plane is expensive and it’s hard to find healthy options. Take some nuts or good quality bars too. Try to keep your hunger at bay otherwise that hunger monster will have you grabbing those Cinnabon’s. I know they pipe that smell throughout the airport.

Stay hydrated

Proper hydration is crucial, particularly when traveling to different climates or engaging in physical activities. Carry a reusable water bottle and aim to drink an adequate amount of water throughout the day. A lot of airports have water bottle filling stations so it can save you money on bottled water and helps reduce plastic use.

If you’re in a destination where tap water isn’t safe to drink, opt for bottled water or use water purification methods. We found these water bottles with built in filters Brita Filtered Water Bottle which aren’t too expensive. Or you can really splurge and get one of these GRAYL GeoPress 24 oz Water Purifier Bottle – Filter for Hiking, Camping, Survival, Travel

Staying hydrated supports digestion, boosts energy levels, and helps you feel your best so do all you can to drink up (water that is!)

Get enough rest

Vacations can sometimes be filled with excitement and jam-packed itineraries, leaving little time for rest. However, getting enough rest is essential for your well-being, especially as a woman over 50. Prioritize quality sleep by creating a calming bedtime routine, ensuring a comfortable sleeping environment, and practicing relaxation techniques before bed. Allow yourself time to rest and recharge, and listen to your body’s needs.

Don’t forget to pack those ear plugs, eye masks, lavender oil, sleep gummies because you never know how loud or bright it will be at your vacation spot.

Pack smart

Packing smart can greatly contribute to your overall wellness on vacation. Consider packing comfortable walking shoes, lightweight and breathable clothing, sunscreen, a hat, and any necessary medications. Don’t forget to bring any health-related items you might need, such as prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements. Being prepared will ensure you can take care of your health without any unnecessary stress.

As a woman over 50, prioritizing your wellness while traveling is essential to make the most of your vacation and ensure you return home feeling rejuvenated not feeling like crap. By incorporating these travel tips into your plans, such as prioritizing self-care, staying active, planning your meals, staying hydrated, getting enough rest, and packing smart, you can maintain your well-being and fully enjoy your travel experiences. Remember, a healthy and happy you is the best souvenir you can bring back from your vacation.
