5 Simple Strategies to Start (and Stick With) Healthy Habits Over 50
Are you ready to make 2025 your year? You’ve got dreams of feeling stronger, moving better, and living your best life. But let’s be honest—sticking to healthy habits isn’t always easy. Especially when life feels like a whirlwind of responsibilities and aches and pains pop up as reminders of the years gone by.
Here’s the good news: You don’t need superhuman willpower or hours at the gym to create habits that stick. What you need are strategies. Real, science-backed strategies that make building healthy habits not only possible but dare I say—fun?
I’ve got you covered with 5 simple strategies designed especially for women over 50. These tips work with your body, your schedule, and your goals. Ready to dive in? Let’s go!
1. Start Small (Really Small!)
When it comes to healthy habits, go for bite-sized wins.
Want to start exercising? Begin with a 5-minute stretch or a single squat. Hoping to eat better? Swap your afternoon cookie for a piece of fruit. Small steps feel doable—and when you succeed, you get a little burst of pride that keeps you going.
Think of it like planting seeds. Tiny, daily actions grow into solid, unshakable habits over time. So, start small and watch your progress bloom.
2. Stack Your Habits
Here’s a secret: Your brain loves patterns. So, why not use them to your advantage?
This is called habit stacking. The idea is simple: Take something you already do every day, like making coffee or brushing your teeth, and “stack” a new habit on top of it.
For example:
- While the coffee brews, do 2 minutes of deep breathing/mediation.
- While brushing your teeth, spend 30 seconds standing on each leg to improve your balance.
By attaching new habits to existing ones, they become part of your routine almost effortlessly. It’s like sneaking spinach into a smoothie—you barely notice, but you’re better for it!
3. Be Realistic with Your Goals
Let’s talk about big goals for a moment. They’re exciting, right? “I’ll work out an hour a day!” or “I’m cutting out sugar for good!”
But here’s the problem: Big goals without a realistic plan can feel overwhelming. And when we don’t hit them, we feel like giving up.
Instead, focus on goals that are manageable and kind to yourself.
– Instead of “I’ll work out every day,” try “I’ll move my body for 10 minutes, three times a week.”
– Instead of “No more sugar!” try “I’ll have dessert only on weekends.”
Small wins build momentum. And momentum keeps you going.
4. Plan for Life’s Curveballs
Let’s be real: Life happens. Kids need you. Work piles up. You’re tired.
Healthy habits stick when you plan for obstacles. Because they will show up.
Here’s an example:
If you’re too exhausted for your usual 30-minute workout, do a 5-minute stretch instead. If you’re dining out and can’t control the menu, focus on smaller portions or add an extra veggie.
It’s not about being perfect. It’s about staying consistent—even if it’s a tiny effort.
Remember: Showing up, even imperfectly, is better than not showing up at all.
5. Find Your Tribe
Ever noticed how much easier things feel when you’re not doing them alone? That’s the magic of accountability.
Whether it’s a friend, a group, or even a journal where you track your progress, having a support system can make all the difference.
One of my favorite things about the Be Healthy Enough community is seeing women over 50 cheer each other on. They show up, share their wins, and encourage one another on the tough days.
So, find your tribe. It could be a workout buddy, a Facebook group, or a supportive community like ours. You’ll be amazed how much stronger you feel when someone has your back.
